Day of the Dead at Tacoma Art Museum draws 4000 visitors to closing ceremony

Fulgencio was honored to lead a team of young people, fellow artists and community volunteers in the creation of his 9th sand painting for TAM's annual celebration of Day of the Dead, held November 3rd, 2013.

TAM will be expanding, after recently breaking ground on a new wing. Fulgencio's design included the footsteps of the dead, (at the far end of the tapete), representing TAM's stepping out into new areas and "going places".

Seattle Art Museum is excited to welcome back our 18th annual celebration of Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) at SAM Downtown. View the installation featuring a monumental sculptural piece and tapete, or sand painting, inspired by the Oaxacan traditions of honoring their dead. Join us for a community reception with 20-piece brass band, Banda Gozona, performances and food on Friday, November 1. The reception is FREE and open to the public.

El Museo de Arte de Seattle (Seattle Art Museum) se complace dar la bienvenida a nuestra 15ª celebración anual del Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) en SAM Downtown. Visite la instaulacion de un tapete, o pintura de arena, inspirado por las tradiciones de Oaxaca para honrar a sus difuntos. Acompáñenos en una recepción comunitaria, con La Banda Gozona y comida, el viernes 1 de noviembre. La recepción es GRATUITA y abierta al público.

This annual tradition of creating temporal works is inspired by sand paintings made in the public squares for Day of the Dead celebrations in Oaxaca, Mexico. The scale of these works is amazing. They use dump trucks to bring in the sand!

Lazo Works on Wheels

You can see Fulgencio's art all over his hometown of Oaxaca, Mexico, including on the side of a local transport company's vehicles. This was a fun project that Fulgencio completed this summer, enabling him to take his art to the streets!

La Influencia - The Influence of Oaxacan Master Artists in the Northwest opens September 23

"Dar y  Recibir” incluye más de 30 originales de acrílicos y óleos sobre tela y madera, monotipos en papel y mixtas. Hay textos acompañando a la obra en los cuales los artistas se expresan sobre los temas de reciprocidad y comunidad. Mientras tres de los artistas actualmente residen en Seattle y tres en Oaxaca, México, los seis han sido influenciados por la experiencia formativa de haber inmigrado a nuevas comunidades. En las palabras del artista Jesús Mena, “Nuestras comunidades tal vez cambian, pero la idea de dar y recibir, sigue viva.”

Mientras las obras en exposición varían en estilo y técnica, las une el compromiso del artista de hacer obra con un propósito, obra que da esperanza y a la vez, las une el compromiso a una vida de servicio a la comunidad. Los seis se han dedicado a ayudar a sus comunidades, ya sea apoyando a artistas mas jóvenes, recaudando fondos, organizando eventos culturales, o en la lucha por crear comunidades mas inclusivas. Su humanismo se refleja en la exposición.

 “Dar y Recibir” estará abierto al público en City Hall Lobby Gallery y Anne Focke Gallery (en el piso L-2 de City Hall), 600 4^th Ave, de 7 AM a 6 PM, lunes a viernes. SOLO SHOW, DIMENSIONES DE LA MEMORIA, OPENS IN OAXACA

Fulgencio's solo show at Noel Cayetano Gallery, Macedonio Alcala # 407, Centro Historico, Oaxaca, Mexico, features nearly thirty works, including small sculptural pieces, acrylics on wood and on canvas. — Seattle artists Juan Alonso, Fulgencio Lazo and Jesús Mena will exhibit their artwork alongside Ponciano Vargas "Kum-Baash", Oswaldo Ramírez and Shinzaburo Takeda of Oaxaca, Mexico in To Give in Return: Six Artists Who Embody the Indigenous Values of Reciprocity and Extended Community at Seattle City Hall, through September 6. A reception will be held September 5th, 4 to 6 p.m., with remarks at 5PM in the Bertha Knight Landes Room of City Hall.

To Give in Return includes more than 30 original acrylic and oil artworks on canvas and wood, monotypes on paper, and mixed media. Accompanying the works are excerpts in which the artists discuss the themes of reciprocity and community. While three of the artists now call Seattle home and three currently reside in Oaxaca, Mexico, all six were shaped by the formative experience of immigrating to new communities. As one of the artists, Jesús Mena, states, “Our communities might change, but the idea of ‘giving in return’ lives on.” 

While the artworks in the exhibition vary in style and medium, they are unified by the artists’commitment to making work that has a purpose and gives hope, as well as to a life of service. These artists have dedicated themselves to giving back to their communities, whether through mentoring other artists, fundraising, organizing cultural events, or struggling to create inclusive communities. Their sense of humanity is captured in this show.
